Meditation is something I have only touched upon. To challenge the mind to be STILL, rather than active ... is something foreign to me.
Have I attempted to sit and quiet the mind?
Yes, but it was a such a challenge for me.
Why? Because I was forced to deal with the incessant amount of thoughts coming in. All I wanted to do was move, to be away from these thoughts ... I suppose, running away from them.
Meditating forces you to sit and be with yourself, and to allow yourself to be an open channel. To allow the thoughts to come and allow them to go. Some thoughts may stay, may aggregate, but if you persevere, these thoughts will go.
This practice of letting go may benefit us all from this hectic world. If we can quiet the mind, the outer world can storm over us, and we may find ourselves well practiced in this storm, whether within or without ... and find peace regardless.

43 minutes into it ... An experimental procedure introducing Vipasanna meditation, or mindfulness of breath meditation, took place within a prison setting. The inmates who have committed serious offenses, hurting/killing another human being, were the group intended to partake in the experiment. If you immediately think that these people would never identify with this type of "rehabilitation", you will be surely surprised. I was very moved ... my heart softened so deeply; it revived my trust in humanity, in myself and my purpose ... I am just speechless, but with a common understanding that we all want a second chance, forgiveness, understanding, and connection ....
Just close your eyes, slowly breath in and breath out, being aware of your breath ... and "see" what comes forth ... it could be the calmness you have been looking for.
